Great excitement and interest is being shown in the upcoming African Regional Trans Health and Advocacy Conference to be hosted by Gender DynamiX in partnership with the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC). Following the very successful Trans Health and Research Conference held in Houtbay, Cape Town in November 2010, this conference is the first of its kind on the African continent and has attracted more than a hundred registrations and conference applications, and fifty submitted abstracts. The conference will take place 26 to 28 November 2011, in Woodstock, Cape Town.
The conference will have a strong focus on access to healthcare for transgender people, and this focal area has been divided into several tracks, among others HIV, Reproductive Rights and Sexuality, and Indigenous Knowledge. Apart from the abstract sessions, the conference will include many workshops and discussion groups identifying key advocacy issues in terms of transgender health, as well as discuss and share best practices. As clear focus rest upon educating healthcare practitioners in this country, for which purpose the conference will be providing CDP points to the medical practitioners attending.
A keynote address will be delivered by Prof Eddie Mhlanga, Chief Director of Maternity and Women’s Health at the National Department of Health. The participation of the Department of Education and the Department of Justice has also been confirmed. Furthermore, UNDP and UNFPA will be in attendance, as well as several other bilateral. An official satellite session with the World Association of Sexual Health (WAS) will also take place, with the president of WAS in attendance. On Monday 28th, the last day of the conference, a press conference will be organised, more information will be available as soon as possible.
